SUMMARY
For clients who, upon release, would otherwise lack recovery support services, Servicios de la Raza provides peer support, temporary housing, transportation, telecommunications, and Spanish language support.  These services enable clients to be restored to competency out-of-custody.

BACKGROUND
Lack of resources presents a significant challenge to out-of-custody competency evaluation and restoration.  Many defendants remain in custody during the competency process because releasing them without stability factors would not be conducive to positive restoration outcomes and may exacerbate behavioral health conditions.

ELEMENTS
Hotel vouchers, peer support, basic needs, prosocial activities, support groups, culturally- and linguistically-responsive service delivery.

PROGRAM STAFF
Behavioral Health Co-Director, Client Services Manager, Peer Services Coordinator (partial FTEs), Peer Specialists (2 FTE), and Bilingual Case Manager (1 FTE)

CAPACITY
120 clients

ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES
Decrease in individuals who require admittance to the state hospital for competency restoration; Decrease in time to reach competency outcome; Increase in treatment service engagement during and after justice involvement

STANDOUT ASPECTS
The funding allocated to this program funds recovery support services, thus enabling the release of individuals who are high need to be safely released, treated, and managed in the community during the restoration to competency process.  This program enables clients to receive high intensity case management out-of-custody, and delivered through a culturally-sensitive approach.  As such, this program addresses individuals’ barriers to release.
