SUMMARY
Operating a housing placement program with connection to services for individuals receiving out-of-custody competency evaluation and restoration; this program serves competency-involved individuals in Weld County, Colorado.
BACKGROUND
When competency clients are released to be restored in the community, often they lack a housing plan and are at risk of homelessness. Stable housing is a key barrier many competency individuals face to be successfully restored in the community. Justice system stakeholders are reluctant to release a competency-involved defendant from custody if they face a high risk of homelessness.
ELEMENTS
Rapid rehousing case management, the resources of a housing navigation center, cold weather shelter beds, bridge housing, and assistance with benefit acquisition
PROGRAM STAFF
Two housing case managers
CAPACITY
50 unique clients
ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES
Decrease in individuals who require admittance to the state hospital for competency restoration; Decrease in time to reach competency outcome; Increase in clients being placed in permanent housing
STANDOUT ASPECTS
The focus of this program is on client housing. Homelessness is a substantial barrier to those who might otherwise be safely released from custody to engage in restoration services in the community. This program also offers different interventions along the continuum of housing (emergency shelter, bridge housing, and permanent housing).
